Professor Li Yanjun of Nanjing Forestry University recently won the second prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award for his project "Key Technologies and Applications of High-Performance Bamboo-Based Fiber Composite Materials," which has overcome many difficulties in the application of outdoor bamboo reconstituted materials and opened up a new field in bamboo processing and utilization.
In Li Yanjun's office, the reporter saw his proud works—a series of outdoor bamboo reconstituted material products, such as outdoor reconstituted bamboo flooring, wall panels, fences, and landscaping materials. From the appearance, there are almost no signs of gluing, and the surface texture is very similar to that of solid wood flooring. However, it feels heavy in the hand, exceeding that of ordinary solid wood flooring. The so-called outdoor reconstituted bamboo flooring is made by gluing and pressing bamboo strips that have undergone crushing and relaxation modification treatment and impregnation with adhesives. This new type of bamboo flooring is non-toxic, does not unglue, is not easily deformed, and has super strong anti-insect and anti-decay functions. Most ordinary bamboo flooring products are used indoors. In the south, due to high humidity, products are prone to mildew and decay; in the north, they are prone to cracking.
Li Yanjun and his team saw that the realization of "using bamboo instead of wood" for outdoor materials with reconstituted bamboo materials could alleviate the industrial development prospect of relying on imports and insufficient supply of large-diameter high-quality timber. Therefore, aiming at the problems of low resource utilization rate, low production efficiency, and serious product homogeneity in the bamboo-based engineered wood industry, they cooperated with many bamboo product companies to establish a project team. During the research and development process, combined with the production technology of "reconstituted bamboo," three different technical routes were proposed in early 2007, and the laboratory research and development of outdoor reconstituted bamboo materials was completed in May 2008.
"Our research results cannot only stay in the laboratory; they need to be promoted to practical production applications." Li Yanjun's outdoor reconstituted bamboo materials have actually appeared around us for a long time. The 2010 World Expo and the 2014 Nanjing Youth Olympic Games both featured outdoor reconstituted bamboo flooring, wall panels, fences, and landscaping materials.
After nearly 10 years of joint research and development by industry, academia, and research institutions, Li Yanjun and his team have broken through key technologies such as fine relaxation of bamboo materials, high-temperature heat treatment of bamboo strips, and efficient reconstitution. They have created key equipment for relaxation, high-temperature heat treatment, and molding, developed four series of high-performance bamboo-based fiber composite materials, overcome bottleneck technologies such as the difficulty of effectively bonding green and yellow bamboo materials and the easy decay of bamboo materials that restrict industrial development, and achieved many innovative results. They have obtained 14 domestic and international invention patents and formulated the national standard for "Outdoor Reconstituted Bamboo Materials." They have established 6 industrialization demonstration production lines and achieved stable production. The implementation of this project has made China the only country in the world that possesses a complete set of production technologies and products for manufacturing outdoor reconstituted bamboo materials using high-temperature heat-treated and crushed bamboo strips as raw materials.
